Ah, makes sense. It's similar in India and other countries, where there are casts and social classes. In my opinion, it's horrible and creates an opportunity for discrimination while prioritizing the social status (which is a scam of its own, imho) over money over personal qualities and character. But it is what it is, and I'm sure it works well for certain cultures?

I'm all for matchmaking and other ways for people to find relationships. After all, being introduced by friends and family isn't that different from going to an "official" matchmaker.

Thank you for mentioning that the Japanese government charges for everything. I like reading and doing online research, but I don't know enough about Japan. I wonder what else they charge for.
