I live in a Canada. In a large city, so I don’t see the bears often. In fact, I’m yet to see one with my own eyes. If it’s a brown or black bear, there’s a decent chance of avoiding an injury or death. There’s no avoiding it with a white bear or grizzly though.
I’ve heard many stories about women being assaulted by men in many situations, including forests, especially in the dark. So I’d be weary of encountering a man in the dark like that. I won’t automatically assume he’ll rape me, but I surely wouldn’t feel safe being alone, in the dark, in the nature, with a strange man. If we’re talking about a hike during a broad daylight, then sure; I’d probably still be cautious but wouldn’t necessarily assume that the guy will assault me.
As for the bear, if you see a white bear or grizzly; you’re most likely out of luck, especially if they’re hungry. I don’t know if I’d choose one of those over a man.
