I'm so sorry you endured all of this hate and discrimination. I truly hope it's going to get better despite COVID-infused Asian hate, and your family or anyone else of Asian descent doesn't ever have to deal with this.
My experience is polarly opposite. I'm a white woman who immigrated to Canada from Europe. And guess what? People assume I'm Canadian-born simply because I'm Caucasian. They have always been surprised to hear my accent as I moved to Canada 10 years ago, as they assumed if I'm white, English must be my first language. And even right now, when my English is many times better and the accent isn't as noticeable anymore, people sometimes get shocked I'm actually a first-generation immigrant and wasn't born here.
I suppose it's a bright example of white privilege I wish I never had. My friends of colour who were born in Canada sometimes get asked where they are from; yet I, an actual immigrant, presumed to be Canadian-born. The irony.
