In Canada, people probably wouldn't ask too many questions. Or more like, they would ask it simply with curiosity. We celebrate our heritage instead of using it as a stick to beat someone with it. I'm sure there are still rude and badly-mannered people... but I'd like to think they are a minority.

If I met you, I'd love to hear about your family and their story. For example, your last name sounds Jewish, and you mentioned German heritage - is there any history there? I would ask you about your life experiences and travel plans. And YES, I would totally ask if you know how to make pretzels or sushi, but that's mostly because I'd love to have a friend who makes excellent sushi (mine aren't as good).

Heritage is what makes us unique. Don't listen to rude comments. You don't have to tick off any boxes for anyone.
